TIME TRAVELLER
2 July – 8 October 2022
Southampton City Art Gallery
‘We are delighted to welcome Lisa Traxler back to Southampton City Art Gallery to present a solo exhibition of her dynamic and striking paintings and sculptures. Lisa’s association with the Gallery began in 2018, when she participated in the group show Dazzle: Continuing the Art of Disruption in partnership with St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery. At the centre of the exhibition was the dramatic hand-painted Industry, the first wall mural created by the artist. This work has gone on to inform the creation of many others including the Time Traveller Transformation series currently on display.
In 2020 Lisa went on to win our biennial Open Exhibition with her acrylic sculpture Time Traveller – Voyager inspired by a painting from Southampton’s Maritime and Local History Collection ‘Approach to the New World (Olympic)’ by artist and Dazzle camouflage inventor Norman Wilkinson. These two works have been brought together for the first time, displayed in the Gallery’s main hall for the duration of the exhibition.
It is characteristic of Lisa’s practise that new ideas evolve from existing works. It has been fascinating to observe how she has used this winning entry as a reference point, expanding and reconfiguring it to create something new and exciting for this exhibition.
Lisa is a tremendous example of the wealth of artistic talent that exists within our region which our Open Exhibition and wider programme seek to provide a platform for.’
